Združuje kraško pokrajino primorskega hribovja in značilnosti notranjskega sveta z jezeri in kraškimi pojavi. Svetovno znana Postojnska jama in presihajoče Cerkniško jezero sta glavni znamenitosti te statistične regije.

The Primorsko-notranjska statistical region had the lowest share of Slovenia’s population in 2023 (2.5%). The region also stood out with the lowest population density (37 inhabitants per square kilometre).

Natural increase was negative in 2023 (–3.4 per 1,000 population), while net migration was positive and at 10.1 per 1,000 population the highest among regions. The share of foreign nationals in the population was 10.5%. Only Osrednjeslovenska and Obalno-kraška had higher shares of foreign nationals. The region stood out with the highest share of men (51.7%). The mean age of the population was 44.6 years. The share of the population aged 0–14 was 15.2%. This was one of the four regions with the share of the population aged 80+ higher than 6%. In Goriška, 7% of the population was aged 80 or more, in Gorenjska, Primorsko-notranjska and Obalno-kraška, the share was 6%. The share of premature mortality, representing the percentage of deaths among those under the age of 65, was the lowest among all regions, standing at 12%. It also stood out among the regions with the highest share of married inhabitants, at 47%, together with Goriška. In addition, the region had the lowest share of children born outside marriage (45%). The region also recorded the highest share of third-born or higher-order children, at 20%, which was three percentage points above the national average. Among the regions population aged 25–64, 13.0% had basic education or less, and 30.9% had tertiary education. Of all 1–5-year-olds, 80.2% were included in kindergartens, which was the second lowest share at the regional level.

In 2023, the highest employment rate was recorded in this region: 73.4% of the working age population were in employment. The gap between the employment rate for men (79.3%) and for women (68.4%) was the highest at 10.9 percentage points. The LFS unemployment rate, at 4.7%, was the highest among all regions. From this region, 44.5% of persons in employment worked in another statistical region, a large majority of them in Osrednjeslovenska. The share of people who worked outside the region of residence was the second highest after Zasavska (53.3%). Average monthly net earnings were the lowest in the country. They amounted to EUR 1,292, which was EUR 153 less than the national average.

In terms of gross domestic product, this region ranks among the economically weaker in the country. Its GDP per capita was the second lowest among all regions, amounting to EUR 19,720, 35% below the national average. This region contributed the second smallest share to Slovenias total gross value added, at 1.7%. The net disposable income per capita stood at EUR 16,562, slightly less than 1% below the national average.

Residents of the Primorsko-notranjska region rated their overall life satisfaction at 7.7 (on a scale from 0 to 10), matching the Slovenian average. The same rating was also given by residents of Goriška and Podravska. Compared to other regions, the region had one of the highest rates of severe material and social deprivation at 3.8%. This indicator reflects the share of people living in households lacking at least 7 out of 13 elements of deprivation. In this region, 28% of households lived in dwellings classified as being in poor condition (with issues such as a leaking roof, damp walls(floors/foundations, or rot in window frames or the floor). This was the highest share among all regions. On the other hand, the region had one of the lowest shares of population living in overcrowded dwellings (7.9%). In terms of the number of passenger cars per 1,000 population (623) and their average age (12.3 years), the region was second.

In this region, on average 427 kg of municipal waste were generated per capita, the lowest amount among all regions and 91 kg less than the national average. Around 71% of the generated waste was collected separately.
