Koroška, the third smallest statistical region in Slovenia by both area and population, covers 1,041 square kilometres. Just under 71,000 residents living there in 2023 accounted for 3.3% of the national population. With 68 inhabitants per square kilometre, this region was one of the least densely populated regions in the country.
The population of the region was on average 45.1 years old, a year older than the national average. The share of foreign nationals was 6.7%, the second lowest among regions. It was lower only in Pomurska, namely 3.2%. The natural decrease, at –4.2 per 1,000 population, was the second highest, and the total net migration, at 1.0 per 1,000 population, the second lowest among all regions. The share of children born to unmarried mothers was the highest with 67.5%. The mean age of mothers at childbirth was 28.4 years, tied with Jugovzhodna Slovenija as the youngest. The share of married population was the second lowest (42%) and the share of divorced people the lowest among the regions (5.5%). The share of population (25–64 years) with upper secondary education was the highest (60.3%), while the share with tertiary education was the second lowest (27.8%).
The employment rate in Koroška was 66.3%, the third lowest. The LFS unemployment rate was the lowest nationally at 2.5%. Average monthly net earnings in this region amounted to EUR 1,365, which was 6% less than the national average.
In the Koroška statistical region, 2.5% of the national GDP was generated. GDP per capita was EUR 22,742, the fourth lowest in the country. Disposable income per capita was EUR 17,104, the third highest among regions, exceeding the national average by 3%.
Residents of this region assessed general satisfaction with their life with the average score of 7.4 out of 10, the lowest score among regions. The same rating was recorded in Pomurska. The severe material deprivation rate was the highest in this region, at 4.5%, while the risk of social exclusion was the second highest, affecting 18.1% of individuals (the same as in the Savinjska region). This region had the lowest share of people living in dwellings with too few rooms for the number of household members: 6.2%, 4.1 percentage points lower than the national average. The average age of passenger cars driven by residents in this region was the second lowest among all regions at 10.6 years, with only residents of Osrednjeslovenska having newer cars on average (10.3 years).
In this region, on average 448 kg of municipal waste was generated per capita, 73 kg more than the previous year. The 19% increase was primarily a result of extensive flooding. Despite this, Koroška had the second lowest amount of municipal waste per capita among all regions. Of the generated municipal waste, 72.5% was collected separately, slightly below the national average of 73.7%.
